Congratulations to Shakira and Gerard Pique on the birth of their ‘dark-haired’ baby boy!

In keeping with their love of social media, the happy news was released by the couple via Twitter and posted on her website shakira.com:

“We are happy to announce the birth of Milan Pique Mebarak, son of Shakira Mebarak and Gerard Pique, born January 22nd at 9:36pm, in Barcelona, Spain.

“The name Milan (pronounced MEE-lahn), means dear, loving and gracious in Slavic; in Ancient Roman, eager and laborious; and in Sanskrit, unification.

Just like his father, baby Milan became a member of FC Barcelona at birth.”

It was Gerard's grandfather, Amador Bernabeu, who leaked more personal details about the newborn's looks, telling a Catalan radio station, "I still haven't seen [Milan] in person but I know he's dark-haired..."

The hospital confirmed that the wee fella weighed in at “approximately 6lbs. 6 ounces [2.9kg], and that both mother and child are in excellent health.”

Not letting a little thing like childbirth get in the way of her love of tweeting, the 35-year-old singer appealed to fans for their support from her hospital bed in the Teknon Clinic in Barcelona, where she gave birth.

She wrote: "I'd like to ask you all to accompany me in your prayers on this very important day of my life. Shak."

The couple also made news last week when they launched their worldwide, online, interactive baby shower where people were asked to give gifts and donations to Unicef to help children around the world in need.
