Predicting the sex

Can an ancient Chinese manuscript really predict your baby's sex?

You may not believe in horoscopes or fortune cookies, but sometimes these things have an uncanny way of working. This Chinese birth chart is said to be able to predict the sex of your baby.

According to legend, the original manuscript was buried in a royal tomb in China over 700 years ago. You can now find it on display at the Beijing Institute of Science or, to save you the trip, we've reprinted it here.

All you have to do is cross-reference your age (at conception) with your month of conception and the chart will tell you if you're expecting a boy or a girl. We can't guarantee it'll work, but it's supposed to be 93 percent accurate.

Of course, if you're looking for something more technologically accurate, you should probably stick to what you see at your scan. But where's the fun in that?

How to use the table

Pick the month of conception from the column on the left then follow it along to the column that corresponds with the age you were when you fell pregnant. As you'd expect, a blue square means a boy, a pink square means a girl.

Please note that it's designed to work on the Western Gregorian calendar: go to this site to discover your correct date details: www.chinesefortunecalendar.com

If you have already had a baby, check to see if the prediction chart was correct.

Wrong for all 4 of my children.
For this Chinese Birth Chart, lunar month and age are both essential as it was invented by the ancient Chinese. By only knowing these two pieces of information, you can then use it for gender selection. Check out the western-lunar converter at www.chinesegenderchart.info
It was spot on for our 4 children.
I just entered the dates for my three little blessings and it was spot on for all three. Girl, girl, boy.
I did this for my 6 and it was only 50% accurate.
It was spot on for all of mine aswell. Freaky.
Unless my scans are incorrect, this Chinese birth chart didn't work for me. Although we conceived just before my birthday, even if were to use the age of my birthday, the chart suggests I'd have a girl (which everyone thought I would), but we're having a boy. Fun nonetheless.
Right for one kid, wrong for the other two. I suspect if a statistically-significant number of people were checked, the chart would turn out to be right about 50% of the time.
It was wrong for my 1st, but right for the last 2.
I've just checked all three of my kids(born 1996,2000 and 2003) and this chart is 100% accurate. Very spooky!
