Amazing baby Liam swimming

Monday, January 9, 2012

Baby Liam is pushed into the swimming pool but look at his quick recovery. He can't be older than nine months, but look at him go. Muy Bien, indeed.

With many parents asking on forums 'what age is safe to start swimming lessons', it seems they are never too young to learn water skills.

While baby Liam seems to take to water like a duck, it is important to see that his mother is helping him to focus on the principals of water safety.

Teaching a child that water can be dangerous and yet fun is a fine line. Liam has a good survival technique, as he is able to float, get himself out of a panic, and move his body to the edge of the pool.

There are babies younger than Liam who can swim underwater, picture the famous Nirvana album cover 'Nevermind'. But don't be tempted to compare, as every child (and parent) is different. You must be ready to help them feel confident in the water, and that means you feeling confident with them. If you are unsure, you can always enrol in a professional swim school.

This is nothing new. In the late 70's it was called DROWN PROOFING. It was a controversial way of teaching little babies to float on their backs rather than lie face down in a pool and drown. The IDIOTS in their ivory towers and probably high up in the swim teaching chain decided it looked bad because the babies OBVIOUSLY didnt like the process. BUT IT WORKED.In 1977 My little sister fell off a jetty at the age of 18months into the Murray River and went under the murky water, she resurfaced crying 'me out' 'me out" BUT she DIDNT drown. Thanks to drown-proofing. Nowdays you pay hundreds of dollars in 'water awareness' classes which are more like mummy-baby playgroup in the water and if the child falls in the pool THEY STILL DROWN. And my sister LOVES the water, she wasnt traumatised by the 'drown proofing'. Its all un-pc now. Its useless touchy feely water play now. Still, no number of swimming lessons will save you if you hit your head on the side of the pool on the way in!
